Stage I Starts Today

Just a quick reminder that we have moved into  Stage I Water Conservation, starting today.   Stage I is voluntary compliance and we have every confidence that Pine Cove Water District customers will rise to the challenge, as they always do!  Many of our customers are now practicing water conservation as a way of life and this is great news.

If you are not sure what all the different water conservation stages entail, please check the top of the blog for the page entitled Water Conservation Stages for more information.  If you have any questions, you can always call us at 951-659-2675 during normal business hours of 9 to 4, Monday through Friday.  Or you can email us at Becky@pcwd.org or Vicki@pcwd.org or drop by the office in person.  It is located at 249217 Marion Ridge Road, right next to the fire station.  Or you can write to us at PO Box 2296,  Idyllwild, CA  92549.

Remember that conserving water today ensures there will be water tomorrow.  We appreciate all the efforts our customers make towards conserving water.

Rain Today!

A storm rolled into Pine Cove over night and left a light dusting of snow.  It has been lightly raining on and off most of the morning.  It is cold, (30 degrees at 10:20 a.m.) foggy and damp.  It is not too much fun to be outside this morning.  There is a possibility of some snow accumulation tonight into tomorrow morning of 3 to 7 inches, but we will have to wait and see if that materializes or not.  Any moisture is most welcome, so rain or snow, we will take it.

All in all, today is a good day to stay inside by the fire if you don’t have to be out and about, but if you do, wear a warm jacket and take a hat or umbrella to keep yourself dry just in case it starts to rain or snow, as it can be sporadic.  Roads are clear, but there is currently a light fog.  While the visibility is good here in Pine Cove,  you never know how it is elsewhere,  so if you are driving, be prepared for the possibility of running into some fog that may be thicker than what we currently have here in Pine Cove.

We will see what tonight brings and I will update weather conditions with a new post tomorrow morning.  In the meantime, the boys finished reading meters on Friday afternoon and Becky is now working on the billing.  Bills will probably hit the mail box sometime tomorrow and are due on the 25th of this month.

Stay warm and dry and please make sure you bring your pets inside during inclement weather!  Remember, they enjoy sitting in front of a nice warm, roaring fire just as much as you do.

And just in case you don’t have a fireplace where you are now, here is one for you.

Raised Bed & Container Gardens

Gardening is a very popular and rewarding past time and is alive and well here on the hill.  We have a local garden club and I personally know many people who just love to garden.  So, as promised, here is a post about raised bed and container gardening.

Gardening here in Pine Cove can be very challenging.  We face a variety of obstacles which included unpredictable weather, plant munching critters such as deer, squirrels and gophers, less than perfect soil and drought conditions.  So what is an avid gardener to do?

Build a raised bed or container garden of course!  I have found this to be the perfect solution to all of the above dilemmas.  Containers come in a large variety of styles, materials, colors and sizes to fit any style of home or garden.  Many plants, including vegetables and fruits, can be grown in containers.  You can also get very creative and create a container garden out of some unusual objects such as metal animal water troughs, old buckets, dressers, wagons, wheelbarrows, wash tubs, old sinks, rain spouting, baskets and many other things.  You can let your imagination run wild!  Here are some pictures to get your creative juices flowing.

Check out my next post for more on raised bed gardening!
