Prescribed Burn

Fire Personnel to Implement the Thomas Mt. Prescribed Fire Project starting June 10

The San Jacinto Ranger District of the San Bernardino National Forest plans to conduct a prescribed fire on Thomas Mountain, starting June 10.

The operation is planned to last from seven to 10 days. The district intends to complete approximately 2,500 acres; the district prescribed burned 2,500 acres on Thomas Mt., in the summer of 2023.

Road closures will include Thomas Mountain Road 6S13 to 6S15 (Forest Service roads) and Rouse Ridge Road 5S15 (Forest Service road), which already has a closure. There will also be a closure of Forest Service yellow post sites (camping sites) on Thomas Mountain. The Ramona Trail 3E26 will also be closed. These closures will be implemented for the safety of the public and fire personnel. Personnel will be driving large vehicles while conducting the burn and patrolling the area.

Smoke and flames will be visible during the day and night. Staff and resources will be stationed overnight.

The Thomas Mountain Prescribed Fire project is located immediately west of State Route 74 and the community of Thomas Mountain. It is south of Lake Hemet. Other communities in the vicinity include Idyllwild, Garner Valley, Mountain Center, Pine Cove, Anza, the Santa Rosa Tribe Reservation, the Cahuilla Tribe Reservation and the Ramona Band of Cahuilla Tribe Reservation.

PRESCRIBED BURN

Copied from US Forest Service – San Bernardino National Forest on Facebook

#ThomasMountainPrescribedBurn

June 15, 2023 – The San Bernardino National Forest (BDF) San Jacinto District will be conducting a prescribed burn today through June 22nd. This operation will cover approximately 2500 acres on Thomas Mountain; west of the community of Garner Valley and southeast of the communities of Idyllwild and Mountain Center. Residents and visitors will see flames and smoke visible throughout the day and evening. Firefighters will be monitoring the area until all fire is extinguished.

There will be more than 100 firefighters from the Forest Service and partner agencies involved in this operation. These ignitions will be carried out through ground-based and helicopter aerial operations. After the active ignitions, there will be several additional days dedicated to mop-up, securement, and patrolling as needed.

During broadcast burning, fire is spread across the landscape in a controlled manner, typically using specialized equipment such as drip torches or aerial ignition devices. These fires are closely monitored to ensure that they remain within the designated area and do not spread beyond control.

If you are traveling on California Highway 74 you may experience brief closures due to aerial operations. These closures are to protect both the firefighters involved in the operations and the public using the highway.

During these operations certain areas will be temporarily closed to the public: Forest Road 5S13, Tool Box Springs Yellow Post Sites, Thomas Mountain Yellow Post Sites and the Ramona Trail. These closures are implemented for the safety of both the public and firefighters involved in the operations.

Prescribed fire plays an important role in forest health and in reducing extreme wildfires and their negative impact. These fires also help reduce heavy fuel loads while simultaneously opening the conifer forest structure and maintaining the health of meadow habitats. Fire is also used to enhance native plant communities and cultural landscapes and improve wildlife habitats. Another goal is to provide defensible space for communities and developed areas within and surrounding the BDF. With all fire comes smoke, and the U.S. Forest Service works to mitigate smoke impacts from prescribed fires on the communities in the area.

Weather

Last week we had quite the wild weather!  The thunder and lightening storm on Thursday afternoon was pretty intense.  The thunder was so close and so loud it sounded like it was sitting right on top of Pine Cove.  The hail was a surprise as well.  I actually saw the snow plow go by my house!  You just never know what is going to happen here on the mountain.  While all moisture is welcome, that was a bit much for the end of May.

This week the forecast is for something much calmer luckily.

Detailed Forecast

  • Today Mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
  • Tonight Partly cloudy, with a low around 55. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
  • Thursday Sunny, with a high near 72. North wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.
  • Thursday Night Mostly clear, with a low around 56. West wind around 5 mph becoming north after midnight.
  • Friday Sunny, with a high near 73. West wind 5 to 10 mph.
  • Friday Night Mostly clear, with a low around 53.
  • Saturday Sunny, with a high near 68.
  • Saturday Night Mostly clear, with a low around 46.
  • Sunday Sunny, with a high near 64.
  • Sunday Night Mostly clear, with a low around 50.
  • Monday Sunny, with a high near 69.
  • Monday Night Mostly clear, with a low around 52.
  • Tuesday Sunny, with a high near 69.

As we move into the summer season, please be mindful of the extreme fire danger that is ever present.  Over Memorial Day weekend, one of our board members spotted 3 different visitors to the hill, flicking cigarette butts out of their car windows.  It will only take one to light a forest fire.  Please remind all your guests who visit you here on the hill, to be mindful as well.  And be sure to do your fire abatement around your mountain home and property.  It is important that everyone comply with this because if you don’t, you can put not only yourself in danger, but your neighbors and the whole hill as well.

Wood Chips and Compost

There must have been a lot of yard work and gardening going on over the weekend because when we arrived this morning, both piles were depleted!  This means Pine Covers are amending their soil so it retains moisture better and putting down wood chips to keep the moisture in the soil.  We are working on getting more compost as well as wood chips, so if you didn’t get yours, do not worry.  I will post here on the blog as soon as our supplies are replenished.  We are so happy to be able to provide these items to Pine Cove Water District customers free of charge.

Compost

Remember, if you need a large amount of either item to check in with us at the office first, as we want to be sure there is enough for everyone.  Now is the time to be outside cleaning up your yard, doing your fire abatement, amending your soil and adding a layer of woodchips to keep moisture in.  These are all very necessary chores that need done, so get them done now so you can enjoy the summer with peace of mind knowing you are doing all you can to keep your mountain home safe and that you are helping to conserve water.

Fire Safety Muster

The Mountain Communities Fire Safe Council is having their third annual Fire Safety Muster on Saturday, April 26, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Idyllwild Community Center Site in the center of town.  This is a very important event because it provides mountain residents with information that they need in order to get ready for the upcoming fire season.

There will be many local and government agencies there to share information with everyone.  One of the featured attractions will be the U.S. Forest Service’s popular K-9 demonstration.  Other agencies will demonstrate activities and safety procedures throughout the day.  The Idyllwild Fire Department will demonstrate an extrication of a person from an automobile and several other fire agencies, including Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department and the Forest Service, will demonstrate hose lays.

The Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit has agreed to demonstrate a rescues provide they aren’t called up to do a real rescue as has happened at the last two musters.  Many other participants, including yours truly, the Pine Cove Water District will be on hand with booths full of pertinent information.  Food and beverages will be available on site throughout the day.  So be sure to head on over to the muster and learn more about fire prevention, abatement, water conservation and much more.
