4th of July fun and safety

Tuesday July 4th will be Idyllwild’s 51st Independence Day parade and celebration. The parade starts  at the top of North Circle Fern Valley corners  promptly at 10am. Get your spot for watching the parade early because there will be some road closures. In the evening the will be a Laser Light show on Lily Rock for some night time entertainment.

Streets will be blocked off at 9am to all traffic except parade entries and support vehicles along with emergency vehicles until the parade is over about noon.

-South Circle @ upper Tahquitz junction

-Tahquitz below upper South Circle at the end of entry line-ups.

Please be safe and remember that ALL fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in Riverside County according to  ORDINANCE NO. 858 . All fireworks are illegal because they cause serious injuries and very often, cause fires. Riverside County has very diverse terrain. The vegetation is very dry and fireworks can easily start a brush fire. Individuals who cause fires by using illegal fireworks will be held responsible for all suppression costs.

Precipitation Totals & Drought

2017 has seen above average precipitation and snowfall after experiencing more than 5 years of drought. Last Sunday night into Monday, we received 5.81 inches of rain bringing our season total to 36.71 of rain/melted snow and 60.7 inches of snow.

About this time last year, 2016, our rain totals measured at 18.78.

By the end of June 2015, the season total was 20.72 inches of rain/meted snow and a little over 27 inches of snow for the season.

The recent moisture has considerably improved the State’s water supply and will ease drought conditions, however, it is important for us to continue to conserve water.

Gov. Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency in 2014, stating the state was confronting the worst drought that CA has ever seen since records (began) about 100 years ago. As of today, all indications show water restrictions will remain in place, water conservation should remain a way of life. Brown’s executive order B-37-16 implemented in 2016 encourages long term water conservation measures as well as planning for future drought conditions.

Snow Totals

Our records show,  6.01 inches of rain/melted snow and 17.7 inches of snow through 4:00 pm on Sunday, January 22nd. Our season total of rain/melted snow is now 24.30 and 46.9 inches of snow. We may have some broken pipes within the District.

According to the weather channel, the next 10 days should be clear but cold. Temperatures over the next couple of nights can drop to the mid teens. If you are unable to turn your water off, or you’ve forgotten, please don’t hesitate to give the office a call, and we will be happy to go out and shut the water off for you.  During regular business hours, the fee for this service is $15.00.  After hours charge is $35.00.

White Christmas?

It is raining heavily, just like last week.  The news is predicting snow down to 4500′ in the San Jacinto mountains.  So, if you’re headed up this way for Christmas, you should pack your snow chains!  And remember when you leave your mountain home, please shut your water off at your customer valve, at the street.

Weather Conditions

We have received 1.97 inches of rain for this storm. We have not received any snow as of yet but there is a chance for snowfall late this afternoon into the night. If you plan on commuting up the mountain, pack your chains and winter wear.

Winterizing your home on a budget

• Clean your gutters: Make sure water can flow freely through your gutters to avoid icicles and ice dams.
• Change your ceiling fans clockwise to force hot air at the ceiling towards the floor.
• Replacing the filters in your forced heating unit improves the efficiency of your unit.
• Window insulation film can help keep heat from escaping out your windows.
• Placing a rolled towel at the bottom of your exterior door or a draft guard prevents heat from leaking out.
• To prevent damage, it is just as important to winterize your vacant home. Turning your water off, unplug appliances such as microwaves and toasters to prevent faulty switches.
• Inspect your home for any openings where animals could use to get inside. Make sure your fireplace flue or damper is closed, as bats, birds and squirrels are known to get inside this way.
•  It is wise to communicate with a trusted  friend or neighbor that your will be gone for a prolonged period of time and they have your contact information. Taking these steps can help protect your home from theft, water damage, and heating or electrical system issues while you are away for an extended period of time. Bundle the house up tight!!

Happy Halloween!!!

For those who are new on the hill or have not heard yet, the Idyllwild Community Center’s Halloween Carnival is tonight. The parade begins at 4:15 at the top of N. Circle Dr. The carnival, from 5 -8 includes food, games, dancing, and a DJ. The costume contest is for both humans and pets. A purchase of a $5.00 wristband includes all the games at the carnival with the exception of the cakewalk and egg smash. Hope you all enjoy a safe family night, on the hill!!!
